NEW I-9: The federal United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a new Form I-9, which is effective today, August 1, 2023. A copy is attached. Employers must start using it before November 1, 2023. You can continue using the former version (which was revised in 2019), until October 31st, or you can change to the new form starting today. REMOTE I-9 PROCEDURES: The USCIS has also published procedures that employers can use for remote employees. This is significant, because previously employers had to send someone to the new employee’s location or hire someone to personally review the new employee’s I-9 documents. Now, it may be done through various video conferencing methods. An email from USCIS which summarizes those procedures, and links to more information, is attached.
E-VERIFY: The remote I-9 procedures require employers to be enrolled in the federal E-Verify program, which verifies that the Social Security card of the new employee matches their name and is valid for work purposes. ALL Arizona employers must be enrolled in E-Verify. It’s required by Arizona law. If you are not currently enrolled, do it now, even if you don’t have remote employees!
